Case Study: Demographics of The Genre

Image
Case Study: Target Audience for This Genre and VR  In this blog, I will discuss about the specific target audience that I am aiming for. According to a survey from Brand Keys which they ask them ( Men and women around 18-49 years old)  about the animated TV series they watched most often. Most of these TV series that they watched are targeted for adult.  The absurd humor requires a certain degree of understanding, hence the age around 18 to 49.  I have been through forums and reddits, apparently people at 58 years old are still watching "Rick & Morty". Other than that, many of the audience fall between 18 - 49.  Now we shift our focus back to the game medium, how can we implement what we have just learned? For games, especially virtual reality has a very specific target audience. We have audience that are able to understand the absurd humor from 18-49, but for the age of the user to use the VR device without motion sicknes...

Competitors of Comedy Genre

Image
Competitors of Comedy Genre The competitor on the comedy genre that I have chosen for this game are only a few since we are narrowing down to the market of Virtual Reality. As I have said before that this genre is not really explored in the VR market yet, but it has the potential to become on of the well received titles. Here are the evidence of the genre that some competitors successfully sold it.                     Here we have two virtual reality games that were developed by Owlchemy Labs. They are a video game developer based in Austin, Texas. The company was founded in 2010. Owlchemy is best known for its virtual reality video game Job Simulator and their latest one, Rick and Morty Simulator: Virtual Rick-ality. Both games are also using humor to entertain the player. For Job Simulator , m uch of the game's humor comes from both  stereotypical and exaggerated  situations in the jobs performed: as a chef...

User Personas

List of User Personas Persona 1: Fong Kheng Wai (25 years) Characteristics Work as a Visual Effect Artist, Compositor & 3D Generalist, Lecturer from Dasein Academy of Art.  He is impatient with games that are too draggy. He has been playing video games since he was 6 years old. Interested in new technology. He owns a PC and HTC Vive. Has a Facebook account. Goals, Needs, and Impediments To have more multiplayer games in VR He would like to see more innovative VR games with rich content and memorable storytelling instead of action games. Kheng Wai is used to playing with his VR games in his room, which is not spacious enough. VR does not have enough games yet in the market yet. My Proposed Game He is interested as he is looking for something different for his VR gameplay. He loves a good laugh if there's a genre that falls into the comedy category of gameplay. Might be a bit too short? If it's a demo then it should suffic...

Script Writing and Finalizing The Levels

Image
Script Writing and Level Design   Crime Scene Level:         For the script writing part, me and the voice actor planned out properly to see which one fits the genre that we are going for. The monologue cannot be too long and draggy unless there's some interesting visual to show the audience, otherwise just needed to be quick and hit the punchline smoothly. We have been going back and forth on refining the best lines for the detective, by researching on how the absurd humor being used in TV shows, especially cartoon. Here we have a full script of what monologue will be deliver for this level. For now this is the best that we can come out with. Diner Eaves Dropping Level:        For the diner level, the script has to be much more interesting due to the fact that the player will need to hold up the newspaper for about 2 minutes while listening to the suspect (Sergei) to talk about his killing. I planned to give the...

SWOT Analysis

Image
SWOT Analysis For this blog, I've done a worksheet for the SWOT analysis. Basically it's to determine your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Below are the working sheet that I have filled up. SWOT Analysis on the game market: SWOT Analysis on my own company: After looking at both of the SWOT that I filled up, I have a more clearer direction and know where is my strength and weakness is. The market should play in my strength due to the comedy genre is still quite new in VR and not many games does it yet.

A New Direction

Image
A New Direction So what makes my game stand out from other similar VR games?  Previously my proposed idea is a mystery solving VR game, which has been done quite a lot of times, so I thought to myself, what if I use this concept as the base but changing the genre instead?  I've started brainstorming again and conduct more research on something unique and seldom explored ideas in the game medium. I was browsing through the Steam VR game list and realized the some of the well received game are purely based on absurd humor. Comedy games is an unexplored genre, but certainly it is used in a few games like Saints Row franchise, Duke Nukem and a few less known titles. While those game might have some witty script writing, it is often used as the flavor rather than the main dish itself.  As a blend of humor/adventur e are still scarce in the VR landscape, I plan to use this chance to explore it. For this week, I have come up with a new idea which can make my game eve...
