Steam VR Tutorial and Toon Shader

Image
I've started to watch some tutorial videos on how to use SteamVR setup in Unity3D, and trying out the HTC Vive that I borrowed from my friend. The SteamVR is actually very user friendly, for now...and I've learn to set up the play area for my "Crime Scene" level. This is the tutorial that I have subscribed which offers some do's and don't's when making a VR game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZTctk19sx8 I have tried creating a 3D previs so I would roughly know the spacing for my game. From here you can see that the two purple wall will serve as the alley walls and the box within it is the play area (User will be interacting with objects within that perimeter). This is the blocking scene for my crime scene, done in Maya 2017. This will be the test I did in Unity 3D to judge the spacing I needed fin real life. I still need to experiment more in order to get the accurate play area that I needed for the game, and at the same time I am ...

Hidden Object Genre in 3D

Image
It will be a Hidden Object Genre, where you will be finding clues to solve the crime. There will be an ambient music playing on loop while the gameplay is going on. I've selected this music out of the other 3, because this one gave me the Sherlock Holmes vibe and along with mystery element. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2jQkO-dhiQ Here is a 3D visual of the Crime Scene. The objects will be scattered around the  Play Area . The objects in the environment will be interactive. The player will be able to move freely around the Play Area for gameplay. Front View Top View Over The Shoulder View Play Area (Highlighted Green) The green box is the area that player can interact and walk around. User Interface and the clues to be model To win the game you will need to find total 12 clues in the scene. I recently found a game that can used as a reference for my game.  It's called  Agent Hawk , the game put you in the shoe of an agent...

HTC Vive Setup

Now moving on to the technical side of the game. I will be using Unity 3D to develop my game. The game will be played through a HTC Vive, which is also called SteamVR. As VR is very new to me, I started checking out different tutorial videos on youtube and try to learn as much as possible so I know the limitation of my proposed VR game. Conviniently, Unity store came with the Steam VR plugin, so all I have to do is to search for it and then download it. As for the rest of the plugins, I will update later on. HTC Vive requires a play area of at least 2m x 1.5m (6.5ft x 5ft). The maximum supported distance between the base stations is 5m (16ft).  As for the base stations, you’ll need to mount them at least 6.5 feet high, on opposite sides of the play area, facing each other. So, for the exhibition, I have to make sure I have the required space and the walls for me to mount both the base stations.   These are all the necessary things I need to take note of, as for th...

Crime Scene Refinements

Image
As I was researching on the crime genre, I discovered that the genre hidden object game (sometimes called hidden picture ). It falls under the genre of puzzle video game, but that is not a problem because most of the detective games are also blending in with this genre which makes it more interesting to solve the case.  Although the story and gameplay is way more realistic, L.A Noire did the same thing as the crime scene is scattered with clues and unrelated object which you as the player will need to find the evidence which connect to the crime.      Mobile games like Criminal Case, which is a detective-theme hidden object game , developed and published by French indie studio Pretty Simple  are very fun game to play with.  The player acts as a detective to solve murders, locating relevant clues at the crime scene   by clicking items in the scene.  During the course of the case, player may find killer profiles, and critical ...

A Hybrid Genre: Crime/ Mystery

Image
After the presentation, I have gathered a few critiques that would need me to really re-evaluate the comedy genre. The comedy I am going for might be a bit risky if I don't really know more about my target audience and their cultural background. Also, that genre itself can either be an art or just pure silliness. My game will be a hybrid genre between comedy and crime since it is a comedic detective game. The target audience would derived from the mystery genre so I will do a case study on it. Hybrid genre : A genre which blends themes and elements from two or more different genres. Crime Genre A type of fiction which a detective (or other professional) solves a crime or series of crimes. The purpose of a mystery genre type film is solve a puzzle and to create a feeling of resolution with the audience. Narrative Flow 1) Equilibrium: ordinary life 2) Disruption of the equilibrium: a crime is committed 3) Recognition of the disruption: detective/police are inf...
